I am interested in understanding microevolutionary processes. With population genetic, genomic, biogeographic and phylogenetic methods I test scenarios of the origin, evolution and adaptation of species. A particular emphasis rests on the analysis of the genetic diversity and connectivity of aquatic invertebrates. Currently, we investigate how macrozoobenthic invertebrates are impacted by multiple anthropogenic stressors.

The main focus of my research within the GeneStream project is to combine morphotaxonomic with genetic approaches to describe species diversity of stream ecosystems. In cooperation with taxonomic experts and the German Barcode of Life (GBOL) project “DNA Barcodes” for macroinvertebrates of two different streams will be analysed to compare inter- and intraspecific diversity. By using the collected genetic data morphological not identifiable larvae will become identifiable via DNA Barcoding. This allows for a more detailed assessment of stream ecosystem communities in the future.

Mich interessieren insbesondere populationsgenetische Fragestellungen.

M.Sc. Hannah Schweyen (PhD candidate)

My main research interest is to understand the influence of ecological factors on evolutionary processes. During my master thesis at Goethe University Frankfurt am Main, Germany, I searched for genes involved in the adaptation of Hydra to different climatic conditions. Within the GeneStream project my research project is to infer the influence of anthropogenic stressors (with special focus on land use) on the population genetic structure of freshwater insect with population-genomic methods.

M.Sc. Martina Weiss (PhD candidate)

My research interests are focused on the adaptability and dispersal ability of different freshwater invertebrates through analyses of their genetic diversity. In my master thesis I analysed the population structure of the amphipod crustacean Gammarus fossarum with genetic methods. Within the GeneStream project I will use new next generation sequencing methods to study the genetic diversity of three species in detail and to quantify the effect of anthropogenic barriers such as weirs and dams on the connectivity of freshwater invertebrates in riverine ecosytems.

In the GeneStream project I work on the samples taken from the emergency traps. I mainly identify dipterans (especially Dolichopodidae and Empididae) on species level to analyse their Barcode region in cooperation with the German Barcode of Life (GBOL) project.
